Participation in conference “Bytes and Biases: Digital political education. But how?”
On September 16 and 17, 2024, a two-day conference on the theme »Bytes and Biases: Digitale politische Bildung. Aber wie? took place in Erfurt, in which our intern Maureen Manuella Mbouwe Mbouende and Aileen Mirasyedi (»School without Racism – School with Courage«) participated. The conference focused on the impact of social media and their possible use in civic education. Questions revolved around: how can social media be used in education? What are the advantages and disadvantages of social media? How do they affect the individual, and what can be done to reduce the toxicity of social media?
While presenting different social media and laying emphasis on the fact that these spaces are mainly the first source of information research for many young people and adults, the speaker drew our attention to Tik Tok. Tik Tok is one of the social media that seems to have a huge but debatable impact on young people. Indeed, Tik Tok’s algorithm is designed in such a way that a simple message can attract more negativity than positivity, which can have regrettable consequences in the long term.
However, the conclusion drawn from the conference is that it’s up to educators to raise awareness and protect young people’s sensibilities.share on Facebook · veröffentlicht am 17. October 2024

New joint educational project in Magdala together with Raus aufs Land and Distanz e.V.
At the beginning of this month, our trainers held their first preparatory meeting to design workshops for the Magdala regular school, which will be held this December by speakers from our network.
For this project, it made sense to bring two of our close cooperation partners on board and work with Raus aufs Land and Distanz e.V. to provide introductory educational activities on racism and democracy for grades 6, 7 and 8.Today we are traveling to Magdala as a project team and will meet with teachers and school social workers. We are really looking forward to it!
This year, we have been able to intensify our work in rural areas of Thuringia and are delighted to have another opportunity to carry out the educational activities developed during the qualification program outside the Thuringian chain of towns.

Workshop “Diversity in everyday school life – how can we celebrate it?” successfully held in Nordhausen
On September 18, committed teachers from the network »Schule ohne Rassismus. School with Courage« network came together in Nordhausen to discuss the topic of ›Diversity in the classroom‹.
Our trainer Joseline Amutuhaire-Ondrusek held a workshop there. She gave a short input on the topic of diversity, the dimensions of diversity and the laws and strategies for equal treatment and diversity (which form the basis for diversity and the fight against discrimination in Germany).
There was also a discussion about how diversity enriches our everyday lives and why it is important to promote it in schools.
At various tables in the form of a »World Trade Cafe«, the teachers were able to discuss various questions about promoting diversity in the classroom. E.g. What does diversity mean in the context of a classroom? What methods can be used to promote diversity (e.g. starting with recognizing the different languages present in a classroom)? There was also an exchange about the good experiences that have been made and about the role of parents and the community.
Finally, the participants recorded the results of their work in the form of posters and designed them. This means that one or two ideas can be used in everyday teaching in the future and promote diversity in schools.
