Module 8 »Postcolonialities«
Module 8 of the Qualifications Programme introduced the participants to the concept of Postcolonialities. The module which took place on the 17th and 18th of February 2024 provided participants with knowledge on the topics of of colonialism, post-colonialism, neo-colonialism and decoloniality. Participants also learnt more about racism and its different forms, which also has its roots in colonialism.
The programme kicked off on Saturday 17th February with Denise Lee introducing the concepts of Colonialism and Racism by sharing her knowledge on the global history of colonization through different timelines on different continents. Julie Onyango then continued by delving into the history of the three colonial powers; Britain, France and Germany and how they interacted with their colonies.
The trainers distributed video and text resources among the participants to analyze and present their findings on the various ways the three colonial empires interacted with their colonies. Yanda Bongo then shared the colonizing tactics used by the colonial powers using South Africa as the case study. Participants learned of tactics like divide and conquer and the apartheid system.On Sunday 18th February, Denise Lee and Yanda Bongo guided the participants to do media analysis using images from movies and magazines and to discuss their connection with postcoloniality. As part of the final session, Yanda shared some statistics about the EU policies against racism. The effectiveness of the EU Anti-Racism action plan was also discussed among the participants.
