Between extinction and commercialisation – Dealing with cultural heritage in the 21st century
Background
What is our cultural heritage? Where does it come from and how should it develop in the future? In this workshop, we will look at the cultural heritage of the world from a critical point of view, identify eurocentric and neocolonial structures i.e. in heritage management and come up with future perspectives of dealing with heritage and tradition in our globalised world.
Aims
- learning how cultural heritage and its global management are intertwined with colonial ways of thinking and acting
- gaining understanding for basic concepts in the discourse around cultural heritage (authenticity, hegemony, essentialism, ›invented‹ history)
- reflection of the future of cultural heritage on an individual, national and global level
- creative and critical analysis of common practices surrounding traditions and cultural heritage
- formulating constructive ideas for current problematic tendencies and realizing own possible impact
Procedure
It gives an exemplary introduction (pictures, statistics, videos,…), creative reflection and analysis of the topic by way of imaginary magazine contributions.

This workshop can be held in German or English.
