Hey Stranger! – Racism and Racial Profiling
Time required: approx. 2 hours
Age group: 15 years and older
Number of participants: 10–12 persons
Previous knowledge: Ideally, discrimination experience of any sort is available
Topics: Human rights, racial profiling, everyday racism
Background
How many faces does discrimination have? Is there only one way to define it?
It is quite a big word with many different definitions. Especially in Germany, discrimination is still a big topic. Examples of it cannot only be found in history, but also in our daily lives. This workshop aims to find out about different types of discrimination through different methods such as roleplay and self-reflection and makes it possible to share personal experiences in a safe atmosphere. Roleplays are especially focused on racial profiling and based on examples taken from real life.
Goals
The aim of the workshop is that the participants deal with the term »discrimination« in a broad spectrum in order to understand the everyday consequences and to put themselves in the shoes of the victims. The participants should be sensitized to the discrimination of certain groups of people and be encouraged to name and act against it in the future.
In particular, the media portrayal of Muslims and BIPoC in Germany and worldwide has changed significantly in recent years. For this reason, the participants must deal intensively with this topic in order to understand how important it is to educate themselves about discrimination.
Procedure
The workshop starts with the personal definitions of discrimination to understand how the participants would define the term. Later on, the ideas are gathered and a group discussion takes place. At the end, the general description of discrimination is given by the facilitator.
Then the bottle-spinning game starts, where three different discrimination-related categories are given. Each participant spins the bottle and chooses a random card under each category. Depending on what is written on the card, the participant is then expected to either comment on the given situation or do what the card says.
In conclusion a roleplay about daily examples of discrimination follows. Each group is given a real-life situation and is then expected to come up with a solution in the form of a small theatre play.
Notes
- The workshop is offered in German, English and Turkish.
- It can only be booked as an on-site / face-to-face workshop.
