Discrimination under the magnifying glass
Thematic links: Migration, anti-discrimination education, prevention of right-wing extremism and promotion of democracy
Background
Human rights are a guarantee of a dignified life; alongside laws and standards, education is essential to promote a tolerant culture. In recent years, political debates about the so-called »refugee crisis« have taken place in Germany and throughout Europe because the population has become concerned about immigrants, but above all about asylum seekers. The media exacerbated people’s insecurity by showing images of millions of people moving to Europe and stoking fears about the alleged criminality of incoming refugees.
All of this triggered the growth and popularity of far-right parties across Europe. In Germany, the right-wing party AfD (Alternative for Germany) was eventually elected and gained seats in parliament, meaning that in the coming years, right-wing extremism will determine the political direction of Germany, especially in states such as Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt.
This affects people’s everyday lives and challenges the harmonized life of both the local population and immigrants. Therefore, it is necessary to address discrimination against all types of immigrants in Germany. In this context, this seminar on discrimination is of utmost importance.
