Weimar: Claiming Space and Memory
We cannot live in the city without encountering its history. Cities are built by powers that dictate the path of history, as well as the values of its spaces. The city is an archive of what it used to be, what it wanted to be, how it wants to be seen, and of course, what it is. The monuments, streets and public spaces represent the politics of power, the everyday lived experiences of people, and the significance of the city across eras. Through exploring the city and its right-wing and colonial history and learning about the experiences of unheard people, this workshop aims to help participants understand the connections between National Socialism, Colonialism, Racism and the city. We will then look for creative ways to reclaim public space and deal with memory culture in order to find new ways to learn from the cities we inhabit, to create a fairer representation of history, and to imagine a more inclusive city.
