Becoming aware of one's own language
Time required: approx. 3 hours
Age group: 14 years and older
Number of participants: 10–24 persons
Previous knowledge: none
Background
Language is our main means of communication. When we learn to speak, we are influenced by many things, by what actually? »Germans are all so punctual!« Prejudice? Generalisation? Which groups do we think of when we hear »the Germans«, which groups not? We deal with these questions and begin to become more aware of our own language. Our language can incidentally and unconsciously exclude groups of people and make them invisible. It can also be easily misunderstood, because in the end it depends on how the other person interprets what is said. So it is worth thinking a little more about what we actually say when we speak.
Aims
The workshop aims to help participants become more aware of their own language and reflect on its use. It is about inclusive and non-discriminatory language, which seems essential for a pluralistic democracy and is therefore relevant for everyone who wants to live in one.
Procedure
The workshop consists mainly of reflective tasks in which questions are thought about both in the large group and in small groups as well as in individual work. The individual sections are connected by energisers and games.
Notes
- This workshop can be held in German or English.
- It is designed as an online offering, but can also be offered as an on-site classroom workshop if required.
