Queer thinking
Time required: approx. 3 hours
Age group: 14 years and older
Previous knowledge: Ideally, basic and human rights should have been covered beforehand
Thematic link: Human rights, diversity
Background
German society is becoming increasingly diverse, also in terms of the expression of individual sexual orientation and gender identity. Political education that is supposed to prepare children and young people for living together in society should therefore deal with LGBTQ+ issues. Prejudices should be reduced, sensitisation for discrimination of LGBTQ+ persons and empathy should be promoted.
Aims
The aim of the workshop is that the participants deal with the concept of fairness as a basic idea of human rights and understand where LGBTQ+ persons (in Germany) experience discrimination (are treated unfairly). The participants should be sensitised to discrimination against LGBTQ+ people and encouraged to name and act against it in the future.
Procedure
At the beginning of the workshop, Article 1 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights is read and discussed together. The term fairness will then be used as a tangible expression and its meaning (what is fair/unfair) will be discussed. Afterwards, the participants’ respective reference groups will be discussed and they will be asked to classify themselves into these groups (e.g. gender, migration background, religion, etc.) and reflect on whether they are socially privileged or discriminated against due to their respective affiliation. Based on this, they are sensitised to the fact that LGBTQ+ people experience discrimination and inequality on the basis of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity, which contradicts Article 1 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights.
