Women in politics in Ghana
Background
This workshop primarily aims to create a realistic perception of Ghana and Africa among the participants and to expand their knowledge. In addition, participants will learn about the roles women have played in Ghana’s political history and how these roles have evolved into today’s activities of women in politics.
By comparing current trends and statistics from Ghana with Germany and other countries where more women are active in politics, valuable conclusions and lessons can be drawn.
Aims
Participants are thus sensitized to current trends in their respective countries and motivated to advocate for more global gender parity not only in politics, but also in other social and societal areas.
Procedure
What is the political situation in Ghana and what roles do women play in it? Participants are guided through a combination of methods to find answers to these questions. The political history of Ghana is vividly recounted to provide clues to the low representation of women in politics today.
The focus will then shift to the women who have set the pace in key political positions in the country, with special focus on the youngest – Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, a woman who is about to make history as Ghana’s first female Vice President.
Participants will be encouraged to identify the reasons for the current proportion of women in active politics in their respective countries in comparison to other countries that are closer to achieving gender parity, while drawing lessons from these countries and each other.
