Determine who knows your data!

Time required: at least 4 hours
Age group: from 10 years
Expected prior knowledge: none

Background

»I have nothing to hide« – you often hear this saying when it comes to your own smartphone, google, apps and co. Yet we send letters in envelopes and rightly get angry when someone – especially adults! – open the door to our room without knocking. And reading someone else’s diary in secret – no way! Do we sometimes apply double standards?
The Internet is no longer new territory, but the right to privacy (UDHR, Article 12) doesn’t seem to be that important. In this workshop, we will learn why this is a misconception and why it is worth taking a closer look at how the internet works.

Aims

In this workshop, participants are invited to reflect on their own digital behavior. What happens to our data on the internet? Why are there cookies and why do companies constantly want to »track« us on the internet? What are Instagram & co allowed to do with our pictures? Based on this, participants will learn how they can handle their data online as securely and independently as possible. We will also look at why this topic is important to society. We will discuss why the right to privacy in the digital world is a valuable asset and worth protecting.

Note

The focus of the workshop can be agreed in advance and adapted to the media use and age of the participants.
