Allyship and Intersectionality
Time required: 3–6 hours
Age group: 18+
Number of participants: 6–16
Previous knowledge required: Basic knowledge of discrimination/anti-discrimination
Topics: Allyship, anti-discrimination, intersectionality, diversity
Background and aims
In this workshop, we will think about the following questions: What is »allyship«? Why do we need it, and how can I practice it in a meaningful way? What are some of the difficulties with being an ally? And what does intersectionality really mean?
Process
After an overview of the history of allyship, we will discuss how different groups have been alienated from society and examine the biases against them – what ideas have we had of different marginalized groups, and how did they develop? We will also break down our own social positions and consider how the intersectionalities of our identities tie us all together.
Notes
The basis of this workshop deals with allyship as a general practice addressing a variety of issues. In the case of a racism-specific allyship workshop, it would be preferable to have a second trainer present. The 6–hour option is recommended.
