Navigating Culture, Communication and Discrimination

Time required : Approx. 6 hours
Age group: 16 – Adult
Number of participants: 8 – 16
Previous knowledge: None required
Topics: Diversity, intercultural communication, discrimination, intersectionality, allyship, empowerment

Background

In a globalised society that is becoming rapidly more and more diverse, we are confronted with people from different backgrounds in all different parts of life, from school and work to shops and public spaces. In order to exist peacefully and respectfully alongside each other, it is important to cultivate mutual understanding between people of different cultures, social groups and backgrounds. Furthermore, we must not only strive to understand each other, but also to help and stand up for each other when our rights are threatened.

Aims

This workshop aims to explore the complexities of intercultural communication, and explore ways to support each other and take care of ourselves in cases of discrimination, and reflect on our own diverse positions in society.

Procedure

We will use different methods such as creative writing, self-reflection, group exchange and games to sensitise participants to the different ways we are all affected by discrimination and privilege and find strategies for supporting people who are affected by discrimination. Suitable for diverse groups, we use the unique experiences and perspectives of each participant to identify areas of misunderstanding and address them together.
