Sexism
Time required: 5 hours
Age group: young people aged 15 and over
Previous knowledge: none required
Background
The term sexism, which is the combination of the words ›sex‹ (biological sex) and ›ism‹ (from another form of discrimination, racism), was conceived in the 1960s by the American Women’s Movement. It is prejudice (bias) and discrimination based on the sex and gender of a person or group; superiority of one sex over the other.
Rooted in gender stereotypes, sexism is based on the fundamental nature of the male and the female sexes and the different gender roles society expects them to do and not do. Though it affects men and boys, sexism affects most often women and girls and others whose gender identities and roles do not conform with their sexes.
Oftentimes sexist actions are either not recognised or are overlooked and ignored, but those actions, words and behaviours have adverse consequences on both the victims and the society. Extreme sexism lead to gender’based violence like rape, sexual harassment, etc, as such raising aware and education on sexism is imperative, and this is what this workshop is for.
Aims
- To explore the term sexism (sex and gender differences inclusive) and its different types
- To reveal and explore the different societal expectations of males and females
- To understand how gender roles and norms affect people’s human rights
- To discuss how to recognise sexist hate languages and behaviours and learn the different range of ways to take action/response.
