Right-wing extremist symbols and codes
Target group: Young people aged 14 and over and young adults, multipliers, educators
Time required: 4 to 6 hours
Expected prior knowledge: none
Background
The workshop offers an introductory overview of the world of right-wing extremist symbolism. The aim is for participants to learn to recognise right-wing extremist symbolism. To do this, it is necessary to familiarise themselves with the meaning and sometimes the history of certain images, terms and codes. However, the extreme right has also undergone a transformation in recent years. It has differentiated itself and partly shifted into online subcultures and niches. As a result, it is increasingly adapting to the zeitgeist.
It is therefore necessary to take a further step and deal with these new forms, some of which appear completely different to those of classic neo-Nazis.
When it comes to right-wing extremist symbolism, another aspect is important in addition to meaning and recognition: its function. Part of the workshop is also to look at the functions of right-wing extremist symbols and subcultures within the radical right.
Aims
The aim of the workshop is not for participants to memorise a long list of symbols afterwards, but to develop an understanding of which (always already existing) cultural symbols the far right draws on – and how to research them themselves if in doubt. Participants will also learn about the significance of far-right symbolism for the right-wing scene and how it is used to occupy space.
Notes
- The workshop is offered in German and English.
- It can be booked as an on-site workshop / face-to-face workshop and as an online workshop.
