Populism: A Tool for Power and Politics Around the World
Time required: About 3 hours
Age group: Young people who are starting to be more involved in political life, maybe will vote soon or are already voting. Ideally from different cultures and contexts. (Eventually maybe middle-age adults?)
Previous knowledge: Mostly experiential knowledge about the concept of populism. Part of the learning experience would be to analyze where we all learn it from and share the knowledge or understanding that we have on it.
Background
Our workshop is about populism and how it is used as a strategy by political actors to obtain power, including the media, in different contexts. We want to have a global perspective and see how populism is affecting many parts of the world.
For this, we want to collect the knowledge of the group and then work with participants to identify the different strategies and mechanisms of populism, and discuss the risks and consequences of populist discourse. In a second part, we also would like to focus on how to deconstruct it.
Aims
To inform about populism, help participants identify how it works in political life, propose ways of weakening its impact.
Procedure
We want to work with the following methods: Plenary, input, flipcharts, writing cards, buzz groups, brainstorming, role play (potentially), gallery, anonymous feedback.
Notes
- This workshop can be held in German or English.
- It can be booked as an on-site workshop / face-to-face workshop and as an online workshop.
