Diaspora & Representation: Whose Story is it?

Time required: 3+ hrs.
Age group: 18+
Number of participants: 6–16
Previous knowledge required: Basic understanding of racism and migration
Topics: Racism, Migration history, Media analysis, colonialism, visual culture, migration policy

Background and aims

»Expatriate«, »émigré«, »immigrant«, »refugee« – what lines are drawn between these different terms for people who have moved from one place to another?

»Whose Story is it« aims to complicate the idea of migration and draw connections with racialisation and colonialism. We will look at examples of contemporary and historical media to think about how racialized people are framed across history, and how these attitudes have shaped economic and migration policy.

Process

In this workshop, we will contrast different diasporas as case studies in order to try to connect the dots between the seemingly disparate movements of people around the world, using the themes of migration history, colonialism, racism and media literacy as connecting points. With the help of group discussions, critical image analysis, research, and some input, we will exchange our thoughts and existing knowledge of the topic in order to better understand how a popular imagination of migration has developed, and to reconsider our own relationships to the topic.
