Approaches to Fracturing the Layers of Racism
Time required : 4 – 6 hours
Age group: from 16 – Adults
Number of participants: 8 – 25
Previous knowledge: Reflection on racism would be beneficial
Topics: Anti-/Racism, Discrimination, Allyship, Diversity
Background
As we become more aware of global and personal power dynamics, the discussion around racism is constantly evolving – and so are the uncertainties. What is the right way to behave? How can I contribute to an anti-racist society? And where is racism everywhere? In order to learn to act anti-racist, we need to have a common knowledge base and learn to recognise racism. These basics are to be created in our workshop in order to then take the first steps towards concrete allyship together.
Aims
The aim is to understand the different levels of racism – intrapersonal, interpersonal and institutional – and to make racism visible.
On the one hand, an understanding of the larger contexts of racism, immigration, imperialism and white supremacy is to be created. On the other hand, it starts with the participants themselves in order to get out of the comfort zone and into the learning zone. Finally, the practical possibilities for allyship are identified.
Procedure
We will use various inputs, creative writing, case studies, self-reflection, group work and discussions to get out of our comfort zones and explore the possibilities of allyship and deconstruct White Fragility.
Notes
- The workshop is offered in German and English.
- It can be booked as an on-site / face-to-face workshop and as an online workshop.
- It was developed by Denise Lee, Joullanar Wannous and Lovis Collas (graduates of our qualification programme).
